Who Justifies Which Systems? Authoritarianism, Class, and Status Legitimacy Across Contexts

Figure 1: Moderation of the Effect of Class on System Justification by Authoritarianism Across Government and Economic Systems. Coefficients are marginal effects (with 95% confidence intervals) of class across low (-1 standard deviation), medium (mean), and high (+1 standard deviation) authoritarianism (indicated by different line types). Orange coefficients are when class is measured using income. Blue coefficients are when class is measured using subjective class identity (e.g., “lower class,” “middle class”). For the “Confidence in Government Institutions” plot, the different labels on the y-axis indicate different data sets (see abbreviations in text above), whereas for all other plots, the different labels indicate different dependent variables. In all cases except where reducing inequality is the dependent variable (“Reduce II (WVS)”, “Reduce II (ANES 2012–20)”, and “Mill. Tax (ANES 2012–2020)”, coefficients below zero indicate support for the SLH and coefficients above zero indicate opposition to the SLH. For the reducing inequality dependent variables, it is the opposite. Details on measures and analysis in full paper.
